Interview with Andy Pratt: The Fighter Physique
November 5, 2010 by Joey Vaillancourt · 2 Comments
Get ready for a killer interview with one of Nefoundland’s most sought out fitness coach for getting bodybuilder’s contest ready and his clients achieve that ‘Fighter Physique’.
Andy and I had a chance to meet back in March this year and have been really good friends ever since.
Andy is a very knowledgeable guy and he agreed to give some of his top answers in this one-of-a-kind interview.
Get ready to take notes
1. Andy, why don’t you give everyone a brief background on your experience in fitness and how you got started out?

Hey Joey, cool, thanks for the opportunity to share. How I got started hey…Well it all began many years ago, as skinny 15 year old kid. I was at the beach with my girlfriend at the time and this bully came over and kicked sand in my face! HA! Just joking, lol. But in reality that was pretty close to the truth. I was a skinny kid, and a girl that I liked at the time went for another guy with bigger muscles instead. So I thought I needed muscles to get the girls, so I started picking up the Muscle Magazines and reading up on how to gain muscle. I wanted to be BUILT!
As a kid that may have been the reasons I started lifting weights, but it became a part of me, I loved working out and going to the gym.
I competed in my first BodyBuilding competition in 2001, I won best poser and placed second in the middle weight category, I was hooked!
Around this time I became interested in Personal Training and helping others with their fitness goals. One client and friend who I helped, John, sent me a heart felt email one day expressing how appreciative he was of my help. John was nearly 500lb when he started, and said even Doctors were giving up on him. John had gone on to completely change his life and physique. He’s now down to around 200lb! One of the best transformations I’ve ever seen. I don’t take complete credit for his transformation (He’s busted his BUTT and worked with other trainers as well) But I do credit him for making me realize the positive impact you can have in changing people’s lives and the reason why I went full time into the fitness industry.
I’ve since gone on to compete a few more times, winner the overall Provincial BodyBuilding Title in 2006 and creating the Body Transformation System Warrior Built.
2. What is the most common problem that people face and that hold’s them back when they are trying to build an impressive muscular physique?
The most common problem I see is over-training with exercise volume and frequency and under-training intensity. As well as not eating enough good clean grub to pack on size. These rules are especially true for Hard Gainers.
3. The clients you work with all agree that their functional strength was at an all time high even while on a body transformation program. So what is the key to developing freak like strength while also developing six pack abs?
I believe the key achieving both a great physique and functional strength is to train for both! Some exercises will accomplish both goals at once, and then I suggest performing some bodybuilding specific exercises in your training split and also adding in some functional strength sports specific stuff too! There are a lot of MMA guys, Foot Ball players and Boxers that have great physiques! The ones that don’t it usually comes down to nutrition, and diet is also key to a six pack as you know!
4. You train a lot of bodybuilder’s and other fitness competitors at your gym. When we were hanging out in Vegas, I was actually dieting for my first show (which I wonJ), so I know how much dedication it and work they put in. What do you offer to these athletes as a coach that has so many people returning to you for contest prep again and again?
Great question! And congrats Joey, I am well aware of how much hard work goes into competing. I feel bad for when we all went out in Vegas to that awesome buffet, you were dieting and couldn’t enjoy the same! Sorry man that food was too good to pass up! But your discipline and hard work is why you won! Congrats!
I usually start working with a client a minimum of 16 weeks before their show. This gives us plenty of time to keep them ahead of schedule with their conditioning and show up in awesome shape! It also allows me to get to know how their body responds to different nutritional strategies etc.
I cover everything with them, meal plan, training program, posing and routine practice, and final week plan of carbs, water and sodium manipulation to have them nail their conditioning for the day of the show!
5. I am a big fan of the MMA sport, particularly the Ultimate Fighter series where they have to work through the ranks to become the next ‘Ultimate Fighter’. On top of being a fan of the show and sport I can’t help but appreciate and respect the athlete’s condition and physique. I know you help people train to develop that ‘fighter’s physique’ so I was wondering if you could share some of your best tips to help someone develop that ‘fighter physique’ so to speak?
Yes I have huge respect for these guys as athletes. I’ve done a little boxing so I can apreaciate, plus add in the ground game and all the other aspects, and the rounds are 5min long! Crazy! Not only do they have to be tremendously skilled to be successful but their conditioning is off the charts! You’re right a lot of these guys also have awesome Warrior Physiques!
To develop a Fighters type Physique, it boils down to the right training program and nutritional plan. But it can be broken down step by step.
I actually have a PDF report titled “Build a Fighters Physique” and in it I out line the 5 biggest mistakes that people make that sabotage their fitness goals! It would be cool if you wanted to share this free with your readers! I’ll send that over to you Joey for you to share!
